Dumb Ways to Build FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about the Dumb Ways to Build game.
Is Dumb Ways to Build free to play?
No — Dumb Ways to Build is a premium purchase at $7.99 USD on Steam, PlayStation Store and Xbox Store. There are no microtransactions, no battle pass and no paid DLC. All future content updates are free for all owners.
What platforms is Dumb Ways to Build on?
PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with full crossplay support at launch. Steam Deck is verified. There is no Nintendo Switch or mobile version announced. The system requirements are modest — most gaming laptops from the last five years run it at 60fps.
How many players can play together?
1 to 4 players in online co-op. There is no local/couch co-op and no random matchmaking — you play with friends via private room codes. Full crossplay means Steam, PS5 and Xbox players can all join the same lobby.
How do I join my friends?
One player creates a lobby from The Hub (Co-op → Create lobby), then shares the room code with friends. Others enter the code from their own Hub. You can also invite via Steam/PSN/Xbox platform invites. Everyone must run the same game version — update before connecting to avoid mismatch errors.
What is the best tool in the game?
The Nail Gun is S-tier for every job type — it is the primary construction tool and no job can be completed without it. The Sledgehammer is A-tier for Crisis and Master Builder where debris clearing is essential. If you can only master one tool, master the Nail Gun.
How do I unlock Master Builder mode?
Complete all 3 Normal Jobs in a job set to unlock Crisis Jobs for that set. Then complete all 3 Crisis Jobs to unlock Master Builder mode. Master Builder is the endgame difficulty with every hazard active at extreme levels.
How do I customize my Bean character?
Your Bean-sona is customized through the cosmetics system. Body colors, hats, faces, outfits and Stumble Gear accessories are unlocked by completing jobs, earning certifications and hitting trophy milestones. All customization is purely cosmetic — no stats change.
How many trophies are there?
26 trophies total: 8 bronze, 10 silver, 7 gold and 1 platinum. The platinum requires earning every other trophy, which means completing all jobs, certifications, cosmetics and Time Trials. A focused completion run takes 15-25 hours.
Does Dumb Ways to Build have crossplay?
Yes — full crossplay across PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch. A Steam player can join a PS5 player's lobby and vice versa. Crossplay is automatic; there is no toggle to enable or disable it.
How do Time Trials work?
Time Trials are speed-run versions of jobs. Complete them to unlock emotes — each Time Trial you finish unlocks a new emote, and completing all Time Trials unlocks the coveted "Mogging" emote. Time Trials are optional but required for 100% completion.
Is Dumb Ways to Build related to Dumb Ways to Die?
Yes — Dumb Ways to Build is the latest entry in the Dumb Ways to Die franchise. The franchise originated as a 2012 railway safety PSA by Metro Trains Melbourne, went viral on YouTube, and was acquired by PlaySide Studios in 2021. The Bean characters are the iconic mascots from the franchise.
Can I play solo?
Yes — solo play is fully supported and is how the game is balanced at launch. Normal Jobs teach the physics system best in solo. Co-op is optional and shines on Crisis and Master Builder Jobs where the difficulty scales with player count.
Does it work on Steam Deck?
